A new work about conversations – across languages, species, and forms of expression

Karoline Wallace is currently deep into the composition process and will meet the musicians for the first rehearsal on February 23–24 at Dokkhuset in Trondheim. This will be followed by an intensive rehearsal period just before the premiere in Molde.

With a background from the Grieg Academy in Bergen, studies in contemporary composition techniques, and a Nordic Master’s in “The Composing Musician” from Copenhagen, Gothenburg, and Oslo, Wallace is known for her open, playful, and poetically exploratory musical worlds. The commissioned work is centered around conversations—both human and non-human—and how communication can be understood as more than just words.

“Conversations across species aren’t just about language—they involve rhythm, resonance, chemistry, signals, patterns, and silence,” says Wallace. She will explore melodies, rhythms, textures, and phrasing from different languages, identify similarities and differences, and use these as musical building blocks in a work that asks the question: What does it really mean to communicate?

A handpicked ensemble from Trondheim Jazz Orchestra will take part in the project:

Signe Emmeluth – alto saxophone, flute, electronics, Åsne Fossmark – tenor saxophone, Eivind Lønning – trumpet, Guro Kvåle – trombone, Heida Mobeck – tuba, electronics, Eira Foss – violin, Joel Ring – cello, Håvard Aufles – synthesizers, piano, Karl Bjorå – guitar, Nicolas Leirtrø – double bass, Veslemøy Narvesen – drums, Karoline Wallace – vocals, electronics, Sound: Tor Breivik, Producer: TBA
