Sverre Sæbø Quintet
Sverre Sæbø Quintet has, in recent years, established itself as a distinct and increasingly recognized name on the Norwegian jazz scene
In spring 2025, they released their debut album If, however, you have not lost your self control on Sauajazz — a release that received widespread critical acclaim both in Norway and internationally, followed by an extensive tour with performances at festivals including Soddjazz and the Kongsberg Jazz Festival.
The music is a vibrant and personal synthesis of Sæbø’s influences, with clear nods to jazz history and artists such as Don Cherry, Henry Grimes, and Charles Mingus, while remaining rooted in a modern Nordic jazz landscape. The compositions carry an underlying intention and intensity, where rhythmic ostinatos and melodic phrases are shaped through close and dynamic interplay.
The album’s title is drawn from the correspondence between Khrushchev and Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis — a historical moment marked by extreme tension and fragile balance. This sense that small movements can have major consequences is reflected in the music, giving it both thematic depth and contemporary relevance.
Live, the quintet appears as a tightly knit and energetic band with strong individual voices. They balance elegantly between control and explosion, creating concerts characterized by intensity, precision, and expressive surplus.
