SML
SML is one of the most exciting new bands to emerge from Los Angeles’ vibrant jazz, improv, and indie scene
The quintet is made up of some of the most sought-after musicians in Los Angeles: bassist Anna Butterss (Jason Isbell, Phoebe Bridgers, Makaya McCraven, Jeff Parker), synth experimentalist Jeremiah Chiu (Ariel Kalma, Marta Sofia Honer), saxophonist Josh Johnson (Meshell Ndegeocello, Leon Bridges, Carlos Niño), percussionist Booker Stardrum (Photay, Lisel, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma), and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann (Perfume Genius, Meg Duffy, Tasha).
The band’s debut album, Small Medium Large, was recorded live during their very first shows at the legendary venue ETA in Highland Park in 2023. Released in the summer of 2024, the album received widespread critical acclaim and landed on numerous “Best of 2024” lists.
In fall 2025, they will release their second album, How You Been, followed by a series of concerts extending into 2026. In March that year, they have been appointed artists in residence at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, where they will perform three nights in a row at the internationally renowned festival for creative music.
SML combines explosive collective energy with intricate compositions and a raw improvisational edge. The result is music that is dreamlike, rhythmically intense, and unpredictable — a rapidly rising band with a truly distinctive sound.
This will be a concert experience for anyone curious to hear where modern jazz is heading right now.
