Bill Frisell FOUR

Bill Frisell has said that the guitar saved him during the pandemic. While the lockdown was ongoing, he wrote stacks upon stacks of melodies for what would be recorded with his new project, FOUR, accompanied by a record release on Blue Note Records in 2022.

The album was dedicated to his musical soulmate Ron Miles and is one of the few projects Frisell has done without a bass. It was also a lineup of people he had been thinking about for a while before they met in the studio for the first time. As with most things involving Bill Frisell, there's a lot of thought behind it.

He says about the process, "Without a bass, it was a little scary, but I wasn’t thinking so much about the instruments. It’s always more about the chemical reaction that’s going to happen." The band only received simple sketches for the recording, making the orchestration a spontaneous, collective process. This speaks volumes about the bond of trust that holds the band together and creates a special energy in every moment.

Frisell says that everyone jumps into it together and compares the band to Miles Davis' quintet, where it's the entirety and not Davis' solo that blows you away.
