Students from the National Jazz Program at Molde Upper Secondary School present their interpretation of the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra

Over the past few years, the National Jazz Program at Molde Upper Secondary School has established a unique approach to jazz education and ear training, in collaboration with the Jazz Department at NTNU in Trondheim and Molde School of Music and Performing Arts. Currently, 15 passionate and talented students are enrolled in the program, diving into jazz standards, modern compositions, and original music that truly swings. Many of the school's students go on to pursue higher education in music performance, and several members of the very first cohort are now beginning to establish themselves as professional musicians. The Jazz Program in Molde has become a scene to watch!

Over the course of three days, students and professional musicians work closely together in preparation for the Saturday afternoon concert. In collaboration with the program’s academic mentor from NTNU, Jenny Frøysa, we’ve chosen a slightly different, yet equally exciting path this year:

This year, the students of the Jazz Program at Molde Upper Secondary School will create a powerful and energetic concert inspired by the rich catalog of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Under the guidance of saxophonist Jenny Frøysa and pianist Petter Dalane, the students will explore ensemble playing and improvisation through Ra’s groovy and playful compositions—where anything can happen!

Just as Sun Ra’s lyrics boldly commented on his own time in the spirit of Afrofuturism, the students will craft their own lyrics based on the world they live in today and the issues that matter to them.

Expect something bold, colorful, open, and full of play—just don’t expect to stay seated!
