Both Elling and Marsalis have had successful visits to MoldeJazz earlier, but this time they have teamed up for a new constellation. Elling performed at the festival a year ago in front of a full house and thrilled crowd, and the press mentioned afterwards: "For the first time, the man with a deep and earnest baritone voice was on the scene in Molde and it took just 3.4 seconds before he had the audience in the palm of his hand. In addition to a being a terrific singer, he is also a very outgoing and charming entertainer who knows how to establish contact with his audience - and keep it "
When Branford Marsalis last visited Molde, he entertained a house full Bjørnsonhus. His quartet is at the top of American acoustic modern jazz tradition and their album titled "Four MFs Playin' Tunes" was named best foreign jazz recording in 2012 by Dagbladet.
It is not too often that the close-knit Marsalis band invite other musicians into their almost telepathic interoperable universe, but they have made an exception for Elling. Band members including the brilliant Joey Calderazzo on piano; the new bass ace Eric Revis and swinging Justin Faulkner on drums help this become a quintet all admirers of acoustic mainstream jazz definitely must see.
